The Acer japonicum Aconitifolium or Dancing Peacock has thickly dissected green leaves give this maple the general appearance that a multitude of peacocks are dancing on the limb. Fantastic performer in the fall as leaves display brilliant scarlet tones with oranges and giving the appearance of flames. Attractive crimson-colored seeds. Aconitifolium means finely cut leaves. Acer pseudoplatanus Esk Sunset (AKA Eskimo Sunset) is a stunning maple! It's spring leaves emerge orange-pink and settle into a leaf that is green splashed with cream and pink coloring. And incredibly the underside of the Esk Sunset leaf is purple! Esk Sunset Originated from the Esk Valley on the North Island of New Zealand, the Esk Sunset will become a medium sized tree will grow to 12 feet by 12' in 10 years. Esk Sunset needs some protection from the hot sun in very hot areas...otherwise fairly sun tolerant. Cold hardy to -10° F. Zone 5.

Acer shirasawanum Autumn Moon has spring foliage which is an unusual pink orange color with an underlying shade of chartruese green. Autumn moon will color up nicely in full sun with a wonderful orange. Like the Full Moon Maple, Autumn moon is a very showy maple - it is one of our favorites. Autumn moon is more hardy and vigorous than the Full Moon Maple A. s. 'Aureum'. Fall color is a rich orange and red. This small tree seems to stand heat well. 12 feet in 10 years. Sun /part shade.

Coral Bark Japanese Maple

The Coral Bark maple has beautiful red winter twigs which are the attraction with this fine Japanese maple. The Coral bark maple is also known as Acer palmatum Sango Kaku. The Coral Bark has lovely green leaves that turn golden yellow to orange in Fall. Sango kaku will grow to about 12' in ten years. Does best with part shade in very hot climates.

Emerald Lace Japanese maple is our favorite green Acer palmatum with finely dissected leaves. Emerald lace has leaves that emerge bright green in spring with red petioles which remain red throughout the season. Summer color lightens to light green with red highlights. Emerald lace has great fall colors that run yellow to orange and finish up with fiery red. Hardy and vigorous. A great plant! Typical cascading habit. Height 5-6 ‘ in 10 years and just as wide. Height can easily be maintained with thoughtful pinching back and conversely - can be trained higher by staking. Does great in sun but in hot areas provide some shade in the the afternoon. cold hardy to -10F.

Emperor I (aka Red Emperor I) is a cultivar developed from a seedling of Bloodgood. Red Emperor is considered to be superior over 'Bloodgood' with more brilliant red color throughout the growing season. Emperor I leafs out about a week later than Bloodgood in the spring, so it's not as frost susceptible early in the season. More tolerant of heat than Bloodgood. Bright red fall color. Upright growing 20 feet. Full sun, partial shade

A very nice red palmatum, Fireglow tends to hold it's red color in the heat better than Bloodgood and other red palmatums. New growth on this vigorous, upright cultivar is bright cherry red that darkens some throughout the summer without fading. Not as tall or widespread as the Bloodgood. 10-12 feet in 8 years. Fjellheim is a maple that arose from a witches'-broom growing on Sango kaku, the Coral Bark Japanese maple. Hence, it forms a compact tree like tree much like the popular Coral Bark but smaller. Fjellheim has the same wonderful bark color and yellow Fall color as Sango kaku, Fjellheim will remain a dwarf growing only 5 feet or so. It is great for the small garden or containers. Fjellheim can be difficult to grow in wet areas - be sure to have good drainage in your soil if you intend to grow this wonderful maple.

Full Moon Maple

Acer shirasawanum 'Aureum' known as 'The Full Moon Maple' or "Golden Full Moon maple" has large chartreuse orbicular leaves with bright red petioles which make this one of the most desired maples. This is a stunning maple! The golden color develops best when the Full Moon is placed in a sunny location - but will burn in very hot areas. The Full Moon maple is rather slow growing and this maple will reach 8 feet tall in 10 years. Brilliant orange and red fall colors (as shown in photo at left). Then full moon maple is cold hardy but give morning sun and afternoon shade in hot locations. Cold hardy to -15° F. Zone 5.

Mikawa Yatsubusa is a hardy green leaved dwarf Japanese maple whose leaves are spaced closely together on short, stubby shoots. Leaves overlap nicely to give the maple a unique appearance. Acer palmatum Olsens Frosted Strawberry is a great Acer palmatum cultivar discovered as a seedling from a Aka shigitatsu sawa plant by Harry Olsen. This exciting cultivar is sure to attract attention in your landscape. Leaves emerge with strawberry cream colors and then change into a lovely variegate. Growth habits appear to be similar to Aka shigitatsu saw - that is - Semi slow growing and weeping in habit. Will grow to about 6' in 10 years. Seems to hold the heat and tolerate sun well. The leaves are more narrow lobed than Aka shigitatsu sawa. Fall colors are a wonderful yellow - orange to red. Sun / part shade in extreme hot climates.

Acer palmatum Pixie is like a miniature version of the Japanese maple Bloodgood. Pixie is a very nice red leaf dwarf maple that has leaves very similar to Bloodgood in that they are a bright red in spring gradually changing to deep red throughout the summer and bright scarlet in autumn. Pixie is one of Mendocino Maples favorite red leafed Japanese maples. Pixie will grow to about 6 -7' high and about 6-7' wide. Pixie can handle a lot of sun but give afternoon shade in real hot climates. Pixie is cold hardy and can handle down to zone 5, -15° F.

Shaina is a unique Acer palmatum dwarf. The dark red leaves of this nice Japanese maple are deeply divided and tend to grow in clusters. Shaina has bright red fall color. Growth to 6 feet. Very nice accent to any landscape. The 28 - 36" plants that we are offering that are grafted on a 12-16" high graft. These will make very nice plants for potted situations or a unique landscape setting. Shaina is hardy but give sun/part shade in very hot climates. Hardy to -10 F°.

One of our favorites out of all the maples, Shindeshojo is a medium sized maple to 8 -10 feet. This Acer palamtum cultivar has the most brilliant red spring color of all maples! Place Shindeshojo next to a green maple and it is a total knockout! New growth on Shindeshojo is flaming scarlet or fire-engine red that holds for several months, gradually changing through mottled red to green in summer. A very nice classy maple. Full size will be about 8' H by 10' wide. Autumn colors are shades of orange and red. Hardy. Shindeshojo is very similar to Chisio improved.
