Wintergold is a relatively new introduction that is sure to impress with it’s stunning golden fall color. New growth is a beautiful pink orange, followed by yellow green in the summer and a brilliant golden yellow in the fall. Sunny areas are okay as long as it gets partial shade throughout the day.

This tree falls in the mid range, reaching 10-12 feet at maximum height and an upright habit. Does well down to -10 in the winter, best suited for zones 6-9.

Acer Sieboldianum Kumoi Nishiki
Acer sieboldianum Kumoi Nishiki is one of our favorite maples due to its unique mottled variegation combined with the fuzzy texture that is characteristic of this species. In Japanese, kumoi means "sky", "cloud" or "imperial palace" and nishiki means "fancy", and this gorgeous plant holds true to this translation. Leaf shape is wide like some of the highly sought after moon varieties in shirasawanum. Spring colors have touches of pink and fall color brings a brilliant combination of purples, yellows and oranges. This plant is extremely cold tolerant, down to zone 5. If planted in the landscape, Kumoi Nishiki can reach up to 15 feet by 12 feet wide in 10 years.

Gossamer is an Acer japonicum dwarf with a frilly, dense growth habit. Quite possibly the most finely cut of the japonicums, Gossamer has a very unique, fanciful look. Beautiful green foliage turns to oranges and reds in the fall. Gossamer is a great addition to cold climate landscapes, as it is hardy to -20. This variety maxes out at about 3 feet high by two feet in width. Best suited for zones 5-9.

Acer japonicum Yama Kagi is a large-leafed maple like O'take. New growth emerges bright green and deepens throughout the summer to a darker hue. Leaf shape of Yama Kagi is perhaps a bit more serrated than other japonicums. Fall color is a breathtaking mix of yellows, oranges and bright reds. This variety can grow rather large, reaching 14-16 feet tall by 8 feet wide at maximum maturity. Like other japonicums, Yama Kagi is a vigorous grower. It can withstand temperatures to -20 degrees. Best suited for zones 5-9.

Acer japonicum Indian Summer is a beautiful full leafed maple with outstanding fall color. Green summer growth turns ablaze with yellow, orange and red colors in the fall. The rounded leaves can get quite large in diameter, giving it a very unique appearance. Indian Summer is a medium tree, reaching 10-12 feet at maximum height with an upright, spreading habit. Does well in sun as long as it gets some shade in the day. Best suited for zones 5-9.

Acer palmatum Pixie is like a miniature version of the Japanese maple Bloodgood. Pixie is a very nice red leaf dwarf maple that has leaves very similar to Bloodgood in that they are a bright red in spring gradually changing to deep red throughout the summer and bright scarlet in autumn. Pixie is one of Mendocino Maples favorite red leafed Japanese maples. Pixie will grow to about 6 -7 feet high and about 6-7 feet wide in 10 years. Pixie can handle a lot of sun but give afternoon shade in real hot climates. Pixie is cold hardy and can handle down to -15° F. Best suited for zones 5-9.
