A wonderful new red dwarf Japanese maple - Acer palmatum Rhode Island Red is going to be the new contender for a favorite along with Pixie. Rhode Island Red is a more compact dense leafed Japanese dwarf form than Pixie. It holds its color very well in the heat and sun. Rhode Island Red has a bright red, spring flush that darkens to a gorgeous purple-red as the leaves mature. Fall foliage is an outstanding fiery orange to red. Rhode Island Red will grow 6 foot tall and 5 foot wide in 10 years. This tree is hardy to -20 degrees, USDA zone 5. This beautiful tree originated in Middletown, Rhode Island.

Rilas Red is a finely cut lace leaf which is similar to Red Filigree Lace. Rilas Red is fairly heat and sun tolerant...so it tends to hold it's color well into the summer. The purple-crimson lace leaves darken in summer, and turn a very nice orange red in the fall. A very delicate and slow grower, this maple does best with morning sun and afternoon shade that is out of the wind placement. This maple can be difficult to grow (but well worth the effort!).

Ruby lace is a VERY RARE Dissectum not commonly found. The leaves are red on the top and green underneath holding color through the summer. Ruby Lace has a leaf shape like Ornatum with Spring color like Crimson Queen that will hold that color well in the heat. The second flush of new Spring growth and all successive new growth will be either red or orange-reds. This plant is different than Red Filigree Lace. Sun/part shade is best.

Ruby Red is a very nice cultivar that holds its' red very well. The leaf shape is similar to Aka Omote, but Ruby Red tends to have more pubescence on the tems and leaves. Stems tend to have a shiny sheen to them like Aka omote. For the time being I am placing it with shirasawanums until more evidence suggests otherwise. Growth to about 12'.

Russlyn in the Pink is a beautiful Japanese maple that has foliage that emerges light orange-pink and matures to a burgundy purple. Russlyn in the Pink has leaves in spring sparkle showing a fine pubescence that makes the leaves appear silvery. In fall, Russlyn in the Pink has leaves that turn bright red with orange-green veins. A small tree with a compact form to about 6' tall x 5' wide in 10 years. Hardy to -20 degrees.

Shaina is a wonderful red Acer palmatum maple that grows to about 6-8'. The dark red leaves of this nice Japanese maple are deeply divided and tend to grow in clusters. Shaina has bright red fall color. Shaina will make a very nice accent to any landscape. Shaina will make a very nice plant for potted situations or a unique landscape setting where a small maple is desired. Shaina is very hardy but give sun/part shade in very extremely hot climates. Cold hardy to -10 F°.

One of our favorites out of all the maples, Shindeshojo is a medium sized maple to 8 -10 feet. This Acer palamtum cultivar has the most brilliant red spring color of all maples! Place Shindeshojo next to a green maple and it is a total knockout! New growth on Shindeshojo is flaming scarlet or fire-engine red that holds for several months, gradually changing through mottled red to green in summer. A very nice classy maple. Full size will be about 8' H by 10' wide. Autumn colors are shades of orange and red. Hardy. Shindeshojo is very similar to Chisio improved.

Skeeter Broom is a very nice dwarf Acer palmatum that arose from a witch's broom of Bloodgood. Skeeters broom has bright red spring color, becoming burgundy red foliage in the summer, and bright red again in the Fall. As typical with witch's brooms, Skeeters Broom has a leaf with a truncated central lobe. Skeeters Broom is stronger and easier to grow than some of the other witches brooms. Skeeter Broom is very hardy and tolerates heat well. At maximum height, it forms a beautiful narrow upright tree reaching no more than six feet. Cold hardy to -10°F, best suited for zones 5-9.

Trompenburg fast growing and has a open growth habit to about 20 feet tall, spreading to 15 feet. It can tolerate full sun, with partial shade in very hot locations. Hardy to -15° F.

Acer palmatum Twombley's Red Sentinel is a compact columnar Japanese Maple with bold dark red leaves much like Bloodgood. Twombley's Red Sentinel is unique, however, because this variety is a vigorous grower with an unusually columnar growth habit. This maple makes a great addition to a tight space where you wouldn't want a lot of horizontal growth. Twombley's Red Sentinel will grow to about 10 feet tall by 4-5 feet wide after 12 years.
