Typically, most of the Japanese maples will do fine in cold climates without any problems (zone 5, -20 F). But many factors can effect their health including; the age of the plant, variety of maple, care, site conditions, microclimates and whether it is planted in the ground or a container.

Ruby Red
Ruby Red is a very nice cultivar that holds its' red very well. The leaf shape is similar to Aka Omote, but Ruby Red tends to have more pubescence on the tems and leaves. Stems tend to have a shiny sheen to them like Aka omote. For the time being I am placing it with shirasawanums until more evidence suggests otherwise. Growth to about 12'.
