Acer ‘White Tigress’
The White Tigress maple is considered to be by some the most striking of the snakebark maples. Bright white striations against a bright green bark is truly a sight. White Tigress is a cultivar that is often described as a hybrid, possibly A. davidii x A. tegmentosum.  Some consider it the most heat tolerant of the snakebark maples. Hardy and fast-growing to 25 feet. Sun/ part shade.

Pacific Fire is our favorite cultivar of Acer circinatum. Pacific Fire has flaming red bark in the winter that dazzles in the landscape with color. The orange - red bark has a waxy sheen to it that really makes the bark shine. Nice bronzing of the leaves when placed in full sun. A multibranching shrub/tree like species that is slower growing. Fall color is bright yellows with some orange which really make a show against the fiery bark! Pacific Fire reaches 10 feet in 8 years. Holds up well in the sun and heat, but will burn in extreme heat (> 90°) Hardy to -20 degrees. Best suited for zones 5-8, (some exceptions).

Acer rubescens Red Flamingo - is a variegated snakebark maple that will be sure to dazzle you throughout the year! Red Flamingo has leaves that emerge rich in pink with deep red young shoots with white-striped bark. of it. The leaves stay streaked in vivid red-pink with white blotches throughout the season. Fall color is rich with oranges and red. Hardy. Medium sized tree to 15 feet. When established, the Red Flamingo can tolerate down to approximately -11° F ( -24° C) - Zone 6.  Younger plants must be protected the first few years form extreme cold. Parentage uncertain - arising as a seedling in the Esk valley of NZ, named originally Esk Flamingo and then changed to Red Flamingo. Probably belongs to Acer rubescens, or is a hybrid with conspicuum.

Acer crataegifolium is a small maple tree native to Japan. Acer crataegifolium is in the snake bark group of maples and hence has white striations in the bark (inconspicuous). Acer tegementosum Joe Witt is a species of Snakebark Maple with beautiful white striations on the green trunk and limbs. Joe Witt tends to have a whiter bark than most of the other snakebark maples with the bark sometimes turning almost completely white. This snake bark cultivar also has the largest leaves of all snakebarks which turn a buttery yellow in autumn. Prefers a partially shaded site. Grows to about 20'. Very cold hardy. Joe Witt was a curator at the Washington Park Arboretum in Seattle and its winter garden was named for him.

Aka kawa hime translates to "small red bark" in Japanese, which like the Sango Kaku, is this cultivar's main highlights. Arakawa is also known as the rough bark maple because it has a unique corky bark. The rough bark shows up after several years of growth and become quite prominent as the maple ages. Beni kawa seems to have a slightly deeper or richer red color than the Coral Bark maple.  Beni Kawa is slightly slower growing than the Coral bark, with an upright vase-shaped habit. Fjellheim is a maple that arose from a witches'-broom growing on Sango kaku, the Coral Bark Japanese maple. Hence, it forms a compact tree like tree much like the popular Coral Bark but smaller. Fjellheim has the same wonderful bark color and yellow Fall color as Sango kaku, Fjellheim will remain a dwarf growing only 5 feet or so. It is great for the small garden or containers. Fjellheim can be difficult to grow in wet areas - be sure to have good drainage in your soil if you intend to grow this wonderful maple.  Fjellheim can have a tough time growing when weather is cold and wet in the spring for days - weeks at a time.

Kotobuki tends to have more pink variegation than Asahi zuru and Oridono nishiki. Added attraction for Kotobuki is that the stems on new growth have bright pink as well. Fall colors are bright oranges to bright reds infused with pink variegation. It will reach 6’ tall by 5’ wide in 10 years making a dense dwarf.
