Akane is a wonderful, showy palmatum that emerges with bright gold and orange leaves in the spring with deep salmon-pink margins. The beautiful spring color of Akane lasts for over a month, with the leaves turning to a chartreuse green in the spring and summer. "Akane" means "deep red" in Japanese and is associated with the glowing evening sky, as is reflected by the spring foliage. Fall color shows more oranges and yellows. This tree is a compact semi-dwarf that reaches about 9 feet high and 5 feet wide at maturity.

Aoba jo is an Acer palmatum dwarf variety with delightful green leaves showing bronzed edges. In Japanese, Aoba jo means "beautiful green leaves". Hardy and strong growing, this tree has very nice fall colors of yellow, orange and finally turning to scarlet. Mature mounding height is about 3 feet tall, making it an ideal candidate for a potted plant or bonsai.

Acer palmatum Aureum has chartruese yellow leaves in spring, deepening to a green-gold in summer. A second flush of bright golden yellow is typical in late summer. Not to be confused with the Full Moon Aureum, (Acer shirasawanum) this aureum has the classic star shaped leaves typical of Acer palmatums. Bright red and orange fall color. Might also be found under the name "Sunrise maple". Hardy and does well in full sun. Upright structure growing to 18 feet in 10 years.

The Butterfly maple is a lovely Acer palmatum with smaller leaves that are variable in shape and known for their beautiful variegated leaf color. The leaves display an array of creams and greens with light pink margins. In the fall, Butterfly has a very nice show of magenta along the margins, giving it a whole new look. This tree grows with a habit that is rather twiggy and vase-shaped, with growth up to 15 feet tall. A reliable variegated maple, the Butterfly is very sturdy and tolerates sun in hot climates, (in very hot areas give partial shade in afternoon). Cold hardy to Zone 5.
