Aka kawa hime is a wonderful semi-dwarf palmatum with bright red bark in the winter. Aka kawa hime translates to "small red bark" in Japanese, which like the Sango Kaku, is this cultivar's main highlights. This tree has dense lime green foliage which turn golden yellow and orange winter. If you like the Sango Kaku, but prefer a smaller tree, The Aka kawa hime is a perfect choice, as it will only grow to 6-8 feet in 10 years. Width to about 6'  Sun/part shade.  Hardy to -10° F

Arakawa is also known as the rough bark maple because it has a unique corky bark. The rough bark shows up after several years of growth and become quite prominent as the maple ages. These trees are popular amongst bonsai lovers for their unique bark which develops even when dwarfed. In Japanese, "ara" means "rough" and "kawa" means "bark" or "river", (the Arakawa River in Japan empties into the Tokyo bay). Fantastic fall color with leaves turning bright orange and red. Growth to 18 feet. Sun or part shade. Hardy to -20 degrees. USDA zone 5.

The Ariadne maple is a very nice reticulatum Acer palmatum cultivar with prominent green-veined leaves, giving it a unique look. Ariadne emerges in spring with pastel orange-pink colored leaves changing to a deeper purplish color in the summer. Fall color is a fiery orange-red. Asahi Zuru translates to "dawn swan" in Japanese, perhaps due to its feathery white and pink variegation which is most prominent in springtime. The back of this specimen tends to have pink striations through out, especially on newer bark. Fast growing when young, this nice maple will eventually produce a spreading plant with the variegation becoming more intense with age. A desirable plant for landscapes, this tree can reach up to 18 feet tall, and 10 feet wide at maximum. Sun/ part shade is best to prevent leaf burn.

Beni hime is a cheery dwarf maple that is among the smallest Acer palmatum dwarfs with red color. Beni hime is a slow grower, forming a small, bushy tree. In Japanese, "Beni Hime" translates to "Red Dwarf". Spring growth is pale pink to rusty red, increasing in color intensity throughout the summer. Deep green spreads from lower branches mid-summer, giving this plant a rainbow of colors. Most leaves are as small as a penny and clustered on short stalks. Great for pots or bonsai as this specimen grows to a maximum height of 4 feet in 8-10 years. Does well in morning sun afternoon shade.

The closely spaced, star-shaped leaves change to yellow and orange in the autumn. In Japanese, "Beni" means "red and "Hoshi" means star, giving this maple an apt name for its red star shaped leaves. This is a very beautiful upright dwarf variety, growing no more than 6 feet tall in 15 years, making it a perfect container plant. Fall color in brilliant yellows and reds. Hardy to -20 degrees.
