Akane is a wonderful, showy palmatum that emerges with bright gold and orange leaves in the spring with deep salmon-pink margins. The beautiful spring color of Akane lasts for over a month, with the leaves turning to a chartreuse green in the spring and summer. Akane means "deep red" in Japanese and is associated with the glowing evening sky, as is reflected by the spring foliage. Fall color shows more oranges and yellows. Akane is a compact, upright, mid-sized maple that reaches about 9 feet high and 5 feet wide at maturity. Morning sun, afternoon shade is preferred. Best suited for zones 5-9.

Golden Falls is a beautiful Acer palmatum Japanese maple that is similar to Ryusen in shape and cascading appearance. This dwarf variety emerges pink in the spring, slowly changing to a golden yellow color that holds all summer long before giving a display of oranges and reds in the fall. Like most weeping varieties, Golden Falls will grow more horizontally unless staked, reaching a maximum height of 4-5 feet in 10 years. This maple is heat tolerant and does well in zones 5-9.
