Butterfly

$76.00

The Butterfly maple is a lovely Acer palmatum with smaller leaves that are variable in shape and known for their beautiful variegated leaf color. The leaves display an array of creams and greens with light pink margins. In the fall, Butterfly has a very nice show of magenta along the margins, before changing to orange, giving it a whole new look.

This tree grows with a habit that is rather twiggy and vase-shaped, with growth up to 15 feet tall. A reliable variegated maple, the Butterfly is very sturdy and tolerates sun in hot climates, (in very hot areas give partial shade in afternoon). Best suited for zones 5-8.

This was the first time purchasing a maple from Mendocino Maples. As I live in CA I reasoned it would be easier than a purchase from MrMaple in NC, especially given the cross country shipping in early summer. Unfortunately, the maple arrived with moderate amount of leaf scorch. While concerning and unattractive I believe the maple will survive. Still, I was disappointed.

Hi Krishna, thanks for sharing your experience. Summer shipping does add heat stress, and some leaf scorch on arrival is common during this time of year — even with healthy trees. It's cosmetic and doesn't reflect the tree's long-term health; you should see strong new growth this season as it settles in.
