Maples with Unusual Bark
Most ornamental trees put on their best show in spring and fall — but Japanese maples with exceptional bark give your garden a reason to stop and look in the depths of winter, when everything else has gone quiet.
Striking bark is one of the most underappreciated features in the maple world. From the fiery coral-red twigs of Sango Kaku (Coral Bark maple) that glow against a grey winter sky, to the ghostly silver and green striations of snake bark maples like Acer pensylvanicum, these varieties deliver four full seasons of visual interest in a single tree. Many also offer exceptional spring foliage color and spectacular fall color on top of their winter bark display.
At Mendocino Maples Nursery we've been selecting and grafting unusual bark varieties since 1992, and this collection brings together our favorites — trees that serious collectors return to us for, and that never fail to become the most-talked-about specimen in the garden.
All trees are expert-grafted and container-grown at our Northern California nursery and shipped nationwide every Monday. Free shipping on orders over $99.
