Beni Maiko is one of the Acer palmatums known for its scarlet red leaves in spring as it begins to leaf out. In Japanese, beni maiko translates to “red-haired dancing girl.” Red spring color matures to red-green with the main veins and leaf stalks remaining red. Fall color is equally as impressive as the spring as the leaves slowly change to a fiery red.

This is a mid sized maple, reaching 8-10 feet at mature height. Best suited for zones 6-9.

Acer palmatum Alpenwiess is a beautiful variegate similar to Higasayama but smaller. Spectacular variegated leaves are white, pink, and green with color perhaps stronger than Higasayama. It is an upright vase shaped medium growing tree that will reach about 10 feet high with a width of approximately 8 feet. This smaller stature than Higasayama make Alpenwiess a likely alternative when space is a consideration. Likes partial shade. Good fall color. Does well in containers. Tends to have some reversion back to regular palmatum.  Rare and unique!

Aka hosada is beautiful new strap-leaf selection that is very sun hardy and provides a display of red colors throughout the season. Aka hosada tends to hold it’s color better than any other Linearlobium and even in mid summer heat. A small upright maple that will reach about 6 feet in 10 years. Can stand winter temperatures down to -10 degrees. Does best in zones 6 through 9.

These Japanese maple trees are green leafed species maples. That is they are seedlings of the genus Acer palmatum. They are beautiful in their own way all slightly different from one another. They are often hardier than cultivars and make a great choice for the gardener that is looking for a Japanese maple for the first time. They are great for multiple plantings in the landscape or bonsai. Spring time color is light green with flecks of red from the leaf buds. As summer progresses the leaves turn a darker shade of green. Fall brings bright oranges and reds to the leaves. Very hardy. Under optimum conditions this tree can grow 30 feet high or more. Many of the trees we offer may have a small grafting scar from a failed grafting attempt.  This scar will be gone in a year or two as the tree matures.

Acer japonicum Yama Kagi is a large-leafed maple like O'take. New growth emerges bright green and deepens throughout the summer to a darker hue. Leaf shape of Yama Kagi is perhaps a bit more serrated than other japonicums. Fall color is a breathtaking mix of yellows, oranges and bright reds. This variety can grow rather large, reaching 14-16 feet tall by 8 feet wide at maximum maturity. Like other japonicums, Yama Kagi is a vigorous grower. It can withstand temperatures to -20 degrees. Best suited for zones 5-9.
