The Japanese maple Nishiki gawa or more commonly known as the Pine Bark maple has very unique rough bark, unlike other types of maples. The pine bark has bark very similar to the Japanese black pine, hence the name. Nishiki gawa’s rough bark forms sooner and becomes more pronounced than that of similar Arakawa. Leaves emerge green and stay green throughout the summer, turning organge and red in the fall. Popular for bonsai, will grow upright and up to 18 feet in the landscape.
